If you are looking for an easy way to cook everything from pancakes to stir-fry without using your stove, then an electric skillet can help you meet that need. The great thing about electric skillets is that they are both easy to use and easy to clean up. This small appliance has a non-stick coating, which helps with the cleaning, and a temperature control just like your stove. You will find a variety of different brands and models of electric skillets available, with some performing better than others. To increase your chances of purchasing a high quality electric skillet, take a look at some of the top models highlighted below.
Presto 06852 16-Inch Electric Skillet with Glass Cover
This Presto electric skillet is one of my very favorite options because it meets my top three criteria – cheap, high quality and plenty of cooking space.
The Presto 06852 electric skillet has 16-inches of cooking space, which means you can make everything from casseroles to roasts to eggs. And one of the coolest features of this electric skillet is that you can also use it as a buffet server. That makes it the perfect addition to family holiday feasts or dinner parties. The glass cover has a cool to the touch handle, which means that you don’t even have to worry about burning yourself, which is nice for accident prone cooks.
The only disadvantages of this model are that it does not have non-skid feet and there are no vent holes in the lid. This means that there is the chance of the electric skillet getting bumped and then moving on your counter. However, if you have a lot of food in it, there is not much moving around. And the lack of vent holes means that hot steam rushes at you when the lid is removed.
The advantages are that it heats up quickly, has an easy-to-maintain temperature control and is easy to clean up when you are finished cooking.
Cuisinart CSK-150 1500-Watt Nonstick Oval Electric Skillet
The Cuisinart CSK-150 is another top rated electric skillet with plenty of cooking space. While it has an oval shape compared with the rectangle shape of the Presto 06852, you can still cook an impressive amount in the Cuisinart electric skillet. For instance, if you wanted to fry up some burgers then you could get five or six patties on the surface for simultaneous cooking.
The CSK-1500 electric skillet comes with a glass lid and has an adjustable temperature control that goes up to 450 degrees F. It heats up both quickly and evenly, which is great for cooks who fill the entire skillet with food. While the exterior is stainless steel, the cooking surface is non-stick. Like the Presto model, you can cook everything from eggs to pot roast in this electric skillet.
One of the things that I really like about this model is that the base seems quite sturdy. There seems to be no risk that the small appliance will tip over when in use. Another good feature is that the unit is dishwasher safe. Of course, with the non-stick surface the clean-up is so easy you likely won’t need to do anything other than hand-washing the skillet.
A possible disadvantage of this unit is that the cord is rather short on it. So, if you do not have a lot of power outlets in your kitchen, you may have to move some things around in order to be able to use it. Another possible disadvantage is the lack of vents on the lid, which can result in some liquid build up that comes out over the sides of the skillet. It does not make a huge mess, but it something to consider when evaluating this model.
Oster 3001 12-Inch Electric Frying Pan
The Oster 3001 electric skillet is my favorite of the smaller options. It has just a 12-inch cooking surface, which is plenty of cooking space for a small family. You can even fit a small pot roast in it.
One of the really nice features of this Oster electric skillet is that the non-stick cooking surface actually has some raised areas so that your food does not sit in grease as it cooks. This is a great feature for keeping for your family healthy. Plus, the non-stick surface is very easy to clean.
Another nice feature is that the glass lid is actually dome shaped, which helps you make the best of the small cooking surface. That means that you don’t have any problem fitting in a small pot roast that is pretty thick in height.
Like all the other mentioned electric skillets, the temperature control is easy to use, heats quickly and the unit maintains and even temperature on the surface.
With this model, one of the main advantages is also one of the main disadvantages. This small appliance is super cheap, which is great for families on a budget. However, the low price of this unit does seem to coincide with lower quality compared to other electric skillets on the market. The Presto 06852 is not much more in price than the Oster 3001, but the quality difference is amazing between the two. In fact, with regular use the non-stick coating on this electric skillet seems to start to flake after 10 to 12 months.
CucinaPro Stainless Steel Electric Skillet
If you are health conscious and prefer an electric skillet without a non-stick coating, then the CucinaPro electric skillet is your best option. It has a stainless steel exterior and cooking surface.
This electric skillet is oval shaped and offers as 16-in cook surface. It is quite a bit higher in price than the 12-inch Oster 3001, but the quality is also quite a bit higher.
One of the most noticeable things about this electric skillet compared to the others mentioned here is how nice it looks. The CucinaPro is easily the most attractive of the electric skillets. If you intend to leave the small appliance out on your countertop at all times, this might be something of concern to you.
A big benefit of this stainless steel electric skillet over the other options is that the glass lid actually has a vent hole. This is great because you will not have to worry about that rush of hot steam when you remove the lid.
Despite the lack of non-stick coating, cleanup with this electric skillet is actually almost as easy. You also do not have to worry about your food sticking in the pan as long as you season it properly for the first use. The best way to do this is to cook bacon in it. This is actually what is recommended by the manufacturer.
Another advantage of this product that is the customer service line is very helpful and responsive. If you have any problems or questions, they are quick to help you and are actually quite pleasant to talk to.
George Foreman SK1403P 16-Inch by 12-Inch SkilLite Searing Skillet with Intelli-Probe Digital Controls
For a slightly different take on the electric skillet, you can check out the George Foreman SK1403P unit. This square-shaped electric skillet has a 16 by 12-inch cooking surface with the depth that is 2-inches. The glass lid is not domed, so you cannot make any plump pot roasts in this SkilLite searing skillet like you can with some of the other mentioned electric skillets. However, this is a high quality product with a lot of positive customer reviews.
Like many of the George Foreman products, this electric skillet is designed so that you can separate the grease from your food while cooking. This is great for people who are health conscious or just looking for easy ways to incorporate a little healthy eating into their lifestyle.
This electric skillet is currently the only one available on the market that has a 500-degree F searing option. So, if that is important to you then this is your only choice of skillets. It also comes with a steam rack, which is great for people who want to use this as a steamer.
Unfortunately, this unit does seem to have some noticeable hot spots, which makes it easy to accidentally burn part of your food. You also do not get any instructions with the steam rack, which means it is trial and error for learning how much water is needed to steam something. This unit also suffers from a short cord, which means that some people might need to do a little rearranging in the kitchen in order to be able to reach a power outlet.
The steam vent on the glass lid is a definite advantage of this product as it reduces your chances of getting burned by hot steam when removing the lid. However, the lid does not have a tight fit on the electric skillet, so you also get some steam escaping from the sides. The temperature heats up quickly, which is great for families that are always in a rush. Plus, this electric skillet is easy to use like all of the other George Foreman small appliances.
